The perfect Turmeric Latte

It seems that the trend for Turmeric Latte is here to stay for sometime.  Appearing first in 2016 in coffee shops and cafes worldwide Turmeric has continued to gain momentum as one of the ‘health’ buzz words of the moment.

I say trend however this has been consumed in Indian households for centuries.  A warming drink known as haldi doodh has been drunk by many children, especially during the winter months when the warming ingredients are known to help sooth sore throats and colds.

There are many ways to make this drink and over the years I have adapted it to include a couple of ingredients that would not have been traditionally used (Almond Milk and Manuka Honey).

Feel free to experiment with the ingredients and find a balance that suits your tastebuds.

Turmeric Root

My one tip is that you use Turmeric root and not the powder.  You will notice a significant difference in taste.  Turmeric root is available in Indian Grocery Stores and recently I found it in Waitrose.  As the root becomes more and more popular I think you’ll find it readily available.

A delicious warming drink made with Turmeric and Ginger root.

Ingredients
  1. 2 cups (200ml each) Rude Health Almond Milk (adapt to suit)
  2. 1 inch Turmeric root peeled and grated
  3. 1 Inch Ginger root peeled and grated
  4. 5-6 Cardamon pods
  5. 5-6 Cloves
  6. 1 Cinnamon stick
  7. 4-5 strands Saffron
  8. 1/2 tsp Manuka Honey per cup (or to taste, also use honey or sweetener of your choice)
Instructions
  1. Add milk to pan.
  2. Add your grated Ginger and Turmeric to the milk.
  3. Add your Cardamon, Cloves and Cinnamon to your milk.
  4. Add your saffron strands to the milk.
  5. Let this come to the boil and then simmer for 10mins.
  6. Add your Manuka honey directly to your cup. The less you heat your manuka honey the better.
  7. Once your Turmeric Latte has had enough time to simmer and the spices have all had a chance to impart their flavours strain your latte into your mugs.
  8. I like my latte frothy so I strain some of my Turmeric Latte into my Nespresso Frother and then add this to my mug.
  9. Stir and enjoy.
Notes
  1. Almond milk is naturally sweet so you may not need to add any extra sweetness.
  2. You can also use dates to sweeten your latte. This requires straining your latte into a Vitamix type blender together with your dates and blitz.

A NOTE TO MY GIRLS: You both love turmeric latte.  Remember not to add too much sweetness and also use fresh root turmeric otherwise it won’t taste likes mummies.  Finally don’t get greedy as 200ml cup is more than enough.
